A Community Comes Together

After six firefighters lost their lives responding to the Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse fire in 1999, the community came together to establish the December 3rd Scholarship. Led by several local foundations, over 50 individuals, companies, organizations, and charitable institutions joined together to grow the fund in honor of members of Worcester's police and fire departments.

The December 3rd Scholarship is a permanent resource for students and a reminder of the service police and firefighters provide our community. Since the first award was made in 2000, the children of current, retired, or fallen police officers and firefighters have received over $990,000 in scholarships.

"The Worcester Police Department and I appreciate the support the Greater Worcester Community Foundation continues to give to members and their families of both police and fire departments. This is one of the many examples we have of working with community partners to improve the lives of public safety workers and citizens in our City."

Making a Lasting Impact

Dale Magee, M.D. and his wife, Melanie, grew up in New York State. Each was the first person in their family to attend college, and each received a Regents' Scholarship to attend a state university. Scholarships made their educations possible and secured their professional futures.

Dale and Melanie established the Magee Family Education Fund in 2003. It annually awards $2,500 to a high school senior of high academic merit who is the first in their family to attend college. Recipients may renew scholarships for three additional years if they maintain academic standards. For Dale and Melanie, creating financial stability for students is an important function of the fund.

"Education is a benefit that pays through generations, and we believe that supporting access for students who face a myriad of barriers is one of the key ways a community can help itself do better. College scholarships were transformational for us and our families. Through GWCF, we can offer similar support to others."
